Raghuram Rajan Reflects on Contested IIT-Delhi Election, Recalls Student Strike in New Book Promotion

by admin

Former RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan, an alumnus of IIT-Delhi, shared insights into his engineering days during an interview with the India Today Group’s Lallantop. Rajan revealed his involvement in an election at IIT-Delhi where he contested individually. He became the Secretary of the English Debating Society and later the General Secretary of the Students Affairs Council, leading a one-day strike against the institute’s authorities due to scholarship issues for Ph.D. students.

In the interview, Rajan expressed that shutting down IIT for a day was “not his proudest moment” but acknowledged his past involvement in politics. The former RBI Governor is currently in India promoting his new book, ‘Breaking the Mould,’ co-authored with Rohit Lamba, an assistant professor at Pennsylvania State University.

Rajan, who studied electrical engineering at IIT-Delhi from 1981 to 1985, emphasized his dedication to freedom of protest during the interview. He argued that protests, whether scientific or political, should be protected, citing civil rights protests in the US as an example of constructive change.

When questioned about entering politics and his association with Rahul Gandhi, Rajan stated, “I have no interest in politics.” Instead, he expressed a desire for India to adopt the right policies for development by 2047, as highlighted in his new book, which evaluates the strengths and weaknesses of the country, encouraging a debate on necessary policies.

In a separate event, Rajan warned that India could remain a lower-middle-income country by 2047 if the potential growth rate remains at 6 percent annually without a decrease in population.
