The newly-elected Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) in Rajasthan are poised to convene a crucial meeting on Tuesday, with expectations running high for the selection of the legislative party leader and the subsequent announcement of the Chief Minister. Bringing an end to days of speculation, this meeting holds significant importance in determining the political leadership in the state.
The BJP, which emerged victorious in the recent assembly elections, securing 115 out of the 199 seats contested on November 25, is gearing up for this decisive internal deliberation. The meeting, scheduled for 4 pm at the BJP state office, will see the presence of observers appointed by the party, including Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, along with co-observers Vinod Tawde and Saroj Pande. The registration process for the newly elected MLAs will commence at 1:30 pm.
Among the prominent contenders for the Chief Minister’s post, two-time Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje stands out for her influential role in the party and extensive experience. She campaigned vigorously during the assembly elections, making her a strong candidate. Another noteworthy contender is Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, known for his victory in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and close ties with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the party leadership.
Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, a former bureaucrat, and two-time parliamentarian from Chittorgarh, CP Joshi, are also in contention, adding complexity to the decision-making process. The possibility of a Dalit leader being chosen as Chief Minister is also under speculation, with state in-charge Arun Singh hinting at a surprise element in the decision.
Amidst the political deliberations, party leaders are mindful of the cultural ethos of the BJP, emphasizing that the votes received were largely in the name of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Former MLA Rajendra Rathore expressed disapproval of lobbying efforts for the Chief Minister’s post, highlighting the party’s commitment to its core principles.
In the midst of these developments, the swearing-in ceremony for the Chief Minister and the council of ministers is anticipated to take place on Friday, adding to the significance of Tuesday’s decision-making process. The outcome of the meeting will shape the political landscape in Rajasthan and determine the course of governance in the state.
